Many dental patients visit West Newton Dental for professional cleanings and check ups alone. However, tooth decay can affect any one, no matter how diligently you brush and floss at home. In order to increase your chances of avoiding tooth decay and gum disease it is just as important to understand how to care for your teeth at home – and not just go through the motions every day.
First of all, it is important to brush and floss your teeth after every meal. Modern dental devices such as pre-laced flossers and single use flossers, make it easy to care for your teeth on the go. When you brush your teeth, make sure you are using a brush with a compact head that is no larger than 1” by ½” in size. Using a smaller brush head will make it easier to reach the farthest corners of your mouth. Brush in a circular motion along the gumline and don’t forget to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth where many germs lie. Finally, be sure to brush your teeth for 2-3 full minutes. Many patients believe that they do this. However, if most patients were to time themselves they would see that they only brush for seconds or just one minute.
When flossing make sure to use 18-20 inches of dental floss. This way you’ll have plenty of floss on hand to use a clean strand in between each tooth. Otherwise you could just help spread the bacteria around your mouth.
